Fluid flow and reactive transport in natural porous media

The course will include 3-days of theory plus 1-day practical presentation at the Hainich CZE field site.

This course is mandatory for all doctoral researchers (PhDs) according to your Supervision Agreement and will be rewarded with 1 credit point (Part I + Part II).



This course will focus on the hydrologic, hydraulic, physicochemical, and chemical aspects of fluid flow and reactive transport in natural porous media like soils, sediments and aquifers. The conditions and presumptions for soil and groundwater flow will be developed. The properties of natural porous media relevant to flow and transport will be worked out. Specific emphasis is put on phenomena that relate to flow and transport in the subsurface, to transport of matter beyond solutes, the key role of structure, and the interplay and interdependence of physical, chemical and biological processes that control the fate and effect of mobile matter in natural porous media. The lecture will address PhD students, postdocs and other researchers interested in a fundamental, quantitative and mechanistic understanding of fluid an energy flow and matter and information transport in the subsurface compartments of the earth's critical zone.


Contents:

  • Fundamentals of fluid flow and reactive matter transport in natural permeable media
  • Characteristics and properties of  natural permeable media - rocks, soils, sediments and aquifers  - relevant to flow and transport
  • Observing subsurface flow and transport: Phenomena that relate to flow, transport and interaction/reaction in the subsurface,
  • Interplay and interdependence of physical, chemical and biological processes and mechanisms that control the fate and effect of mobile solute matter and beyond
  • Presentation: Flow and transport modeling
  • Practical presentation: Groundwater monitoring, groundwater and seepage sampling
